HEALTH TALK BY THE PHYSIOTHERAPY AND ORTHOTICS TRAINING SCHOOL

The first presentation with the catholic church on low back pain.

The physiotherapy and Orthotics Training school, now known as the St. John of God College of Health 2019/2020 SRC administration has expanded their boundaries, taking upon themselves a great responsibility to educate the community on certain conditions which has become rampant in the vicinity.

The SRC president Edward Fosu Quarshie, along with his vice President, the SRC general secretary as well as the library prefect (Academic Prefect)  in the course of the semester have decided to do an outreach program mainly for Health talk at various churches in Duayaw Nkwanta in the Ahafo region where the aforementioned school is located.

Commencing this initiative, the first church to enjoy had an encounter with this group on  the 15th of February, 2020.

The St. John of God Catholic Church, was the first church to receive this health talk on low back pain; one of the most burdened condition that has become rampant not only in the vicinity, but in most communities.

The talk was began by Honorable Collins Annor, the SRC general secretary.
Along his presentation, he made it clear to the congregation that, the human back is made up 33 vertebrae bones.
The cervical vertebrae(7), Thoracic(12), the Lumbar(5), and the sacral vertebrae (5) and the coccyx (3-4).

He stressed on the importance of these vertebrae bones to the body and enlightened the congregation on the changes that could increase one's risk of developing low back pain.
All he said, reads ;
The Vertebrae bones play numerous functions which assist the body in diverse ways.
👁Transmits body weight to the lower limbs
👁Surrounds and protect the spinal cord
👁Provides attachment points for ribs and muscles
Collins also highlighted on movement that can take place in the lumbar vertebrae such as 👁Flexion, 👁Extension, 👁Lateral rotation and said finally that, 👁The lumbar vertebrae receives most stress, since their bodies are massive(L1-L5) and that the most diagnosed area with pain.

The need for the cause of low back pain arose after the congregation was enlightened on the anatomical structure of the vertebrae bones by Collins and so the library prefect(Thomas Adjei Bio) was introduced to deliver talk on the causes of low back pain.

During the course of his presentation, he made it clear that there are numerous ways, that may contribute to low back pain, but he sticked to just very few and common ones among the causes. He said that;

1.Trauma to the back can cause low back pain. Trauma can cause Low back pain because, there could be fracture to the low back bone due to trauma or in the course of the trauma, structures such as ligaments  tendons, blood vessels and nerves can be affected, causing pain.

2.Normal pregnancy: He also stressed that, normal pregnancy add extra weight to the body and since the body's weight is centered on the lower back, pregnancy may stretches other nearest structures at the lower back which may trigger pain in most women when pregnant.

3. Disc herniation and degeneration.
According to him, disc herniation(descending of synovial fluid via cracks, which solidifies) compresses nerves and may trigger pain. He also said that the degeneration(wearing out) of the articular cartilage found in between the vertebrae bones, can also trigger pain at the back.

4.Spondylosis : With this, he added that spondylosis is a general term used to describe degenerative conditions that affect the spine, such as disc herniation, spondylolysthesis, disc degeneration, spinal stenosis and others. Spondylosis is most of the time, the main cause of low back pain.

5.Wrong postures such as sloughing when sitting, prolong sitting and bending.

He asked the congregation on the symptoms of low back pain and very few answers were given. He revealed certain symptoms including, pain that becomes severe at night, and radiating pain into the back of the lower  limb(LL), numbness in the LL as well as pain centered on the lower back which becomes worse on activities.

How is the low back pain diagnosed? He asked.

He made it known to the congregation that, the diagnosis of low back pain is very important due to the fact that, it's not only the presence of the aforementioned causes that can be used to ascertain or spot the condition, but numerous factors may be  major contributing factors.
He read that;
"👁As much as you know some of the causes of low back pain, does not mean that, every pain felt at the lower back or the nearest part, should always  be taken or perceived as low back pain. But problem with certain major organs can refer pain to various sections or part of the body which may really need abrupt medical attention. Therefore, proper medical diagnosis should be sought first before the condition can be spotted.
👁Doctors may prescribe X-rays to view changes in the vertebrae such as disc herniation, disc degeneration, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, vertebrae fractures and others to determine the cause", he stressed. And doctors may also perform certain test all in the name of ascertaining the condition, which may include straight leg raise test with flip test and others.

The final aspect of the talk was done by the vice President of the college on physiotherapy management of low back pain.
He addressed on assuming good postures for daily activities, seeing physiotherapist for stretching exercises, and application of various Physio techniques in the management of low back pain such as massage and hot pack application

Massaging the low back

  The hot pack apparatus
 Hot pack application
Some stretching exercises that can be prescribed by physiotherapist

He advised the congregation to avoid self administration of certain pain killer medications, as these may cause greater damage to the major organs and tackle only the symptoms whilst the route cause of the disease is not reached. This is not so with physiotherapy, he added.

He also demonstrated some good postures to the church as in sitting, standing, lying on mattresses, and even lifting a load from the group.

 Vice President demonstrate where pain normally centres in low back pain.
 SRC president demonstrating the location of vertebra bones.
The vice President delivering his speech on the physio management of low back pain.

Cervical (7), thoracic (12),Lumbar(5),Sacral(4),Coccyx (3). These bones lie on each other and separated from each other by cartilage containing fluid-filled substance called synovial fluid. This cartilage is found on the surfaces of each of the vertebrae bones articulating with each other in providing cushioning and serves as shock absorbers. It also prevents the bones from kissing each other, that may cause inflammation. Lumbar spondylosis is described as all degenerative conditions affecting the lumbar spine. This degenerative conditions ma...
